Biography of the director
Aleš Novak was born in Maribor. He graduated in theatre and radio directing from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in 1997.
From 1997 to 2002 he worked as an independent cultural worker, during which time he directed theatre plays, was the art director of theatre festivals (Monodrama Festival Ptuj, Kurentovanje, Poletje v starem mestu), directed radio shows, mainly in the field of literature, served as a member of expert committees in the field of theatre (member of the expert committee for conferring the Grün-Filipič Award for achievement in dramaturgy, member of the expert committee for selecting the best monodrama), and worked as an expert associate and selector at JSKD - Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia.
From 2003 to 2007 he worked as an independent author at RTV Slovenia, mainly as director and editor of the cultural programme, from 2007 to 2009 he headed the public institution Youth Cultural Centre Maribor. In 2009 he took over the management of the Culture and Youth Office at the Municipality of Maribor, for part of 2010 he also performed the functions of the acting programme director of the European Capital of Culture.
Since 2011 he has been the president of the expert group of the Maribor Theatre Festival, in the past he also performed various functions in the working group of the National Council for Culture of the Republic of Slovenia in the field of operationalising Europeans resources in culture. He was a member of the working group of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport for modernizing the public sector in culture, the working group for youth issues at the Association of Municipalities and Towns of Slovenia, the working group for the field of culture at the Association of Municipalities and Towns of Slovenia, the committee for youth issues at the Municipality of Maribor and various project groups in the field of culture at the local level.
Since March 2013 he has worked as the director of the Slovenian Book Agency.
