Ambrož, the main character, is an illustrator and designer in his thirties living in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. He lives in an apartment with his girlfriend, two cats, and a sickly old dog named Darwin. His work for advertising agencies pays the bills but it also consumes most of his time, so there is not much of it left for his passion, drawing. The graphic novel City Birds places us in the protagonist's life at a juncture – one that many of us are all too familiar with – when he must determine how he wants to live his life and what is truly important to him, and then take responsibility for it and grow up. We can feel the heartbeat of the city, punctuated with witticisms produced out of the author's keen and delicate observation of the surroundings and individuals in particular, thanks to the author's melancholic atmosphere, which he achieves mostly through his careful use of color. Gašper Krajnc's aesthetic is similar to that of American comic books. He also has a keen eye for detail and a fondness for metaphors, such as the one in the title.
Gašper Krajnc
Gašper Krajnc (1985) graduated from the Faculty of Theology, but he now works as an illustrator and cartoonist. He has co-authored two graphic novels as an illustrator, Rite (2016, in English) and Malgaj (2018), and he may be found in two recent anthologies of Slovenian comics, covering the years 2006 to 2016 and 1927 to 2017. In 2020, VigeVageKnjige published City Birds, his first graphic novel in which he created both the visuals and the text. The book garnered a lot of positive reviews from both the general public and specialists, and a year later, it was given the Zlatirepec Award for the best Slovenian original graphic novel for adults.
