- Original title: Kolaps elite: iskanje normalnosti in naprednosti v majhni evropski državi
The texts collected in the book analyse the development of Slovenian society from the success story of its transition to its developmental collapse. The work points out the mistakes of the Slovenian political and economic elite, which was not capable of triggering a developmental breakthrough, especially in the fields of education, science, and other social infrastructures, after the Fordist cycle ended around 2000. Instead, it financed, with external borrowing, the expansion of low-tech industries and the management buyouts of companies. This caused a financial crisis, which they solved by socialising debts and by the European centres of financial power taking control of the Slovenian public finances and economic systems. According to Drenovec, a new developmental breakthrough is possible only on the basis of new ways of thinking, investments in knowledge, and the motivation of the population, with neoliberal individualism and a focus on appropriation presenting an ideological hindrance.
