The Collapse of the “Third Way” provides an analysis of the political and economic processes in Slovenia from independence (1991) until around 2018. The book is divided into two broad thematic parts. In the first part, the book analyses the processes related to the Slovenian transition strategy (the “third way”), by focusing on the impact of EU accession and class power relations on the Slovenian transition processes and the project of building a national bourgeoisie. The second part focuses on the post-2008 crisis period and the radicalisation of neoliberal policies, the failure of the project of building a domestic capitalist class, while also exploring the pressures exerted by the EU through the European Semester mechanism. The limitations of democracy through changes in the constitution are analysed by pointing out the necessity to limit the scope of democracy for the new model of capitalism. Through the analysis of the recapitalisation of the banking sector and the sell-off of all the state-owned banks and several state-owned companies to foreign corporations, the book concludes with the explanation of the processes of the establishment of dependent capitalism in Slovenia.
