The collection of ampelographic gouaches which was painted by Vinzenz and Conrad Kreuzer in the 1830s is invaluable pictorial material on wine grape varieties. According to the information available to us, no similar collection of depictions is known, which would so comprehensively represent the wine grape varieties that were cultivated in Styria almost 200 years ago. In 1872, the Styrian regional School of Fruit Growing and Winemaking was founded in the wine-growing outskirts of the town, and the collection of 150 gouaches served as a teaching aid. There are 126 originals in the collection, which is now the property of the Institute of Agriculture and Forestry in Maribor, and the book also includes color lithographs from the ampelographic atlas and black-and-white reproductions from the ampelographic manual, which are also based on Kreuzer's gouaches, however, they have unfortunately been lost until today. In 2003, the book was included in the bibliography of the history and culture of wine by Renata Schoene (under number/Titel-Nr. 15409) and has become an indispensable resource for the study of the European history of ampelography. |
